GPN Ready nurse blog – week 15

This week Jack* battles the Beast From The East and gains confidence with his travel vaccination knowledge.

We have teamed up with newly-qualified nurse Jack,*one of Health Education England’s GPN Ready Scheme nurses, to find out exactly what it is like to make the move from nursing student straight to GP nurse! Every week, we will be hearing from Jack* and finding out about his week in General Practice. Over to you, Jack*!

How has your week been?

This week has only been a 4-day week for me due to the Bank Holiday! However, with that comes a large amount of disruption for patients undergoing regular treatment pathways at the practice. This week saw me working on a Tuesday for the first time to cover for staff sick leave.

What have you mostly been doing at the Practice this week?

This week has seen a large amount of dressing changes, lots of wounds healing and lots of fresh wounds beginning treatment. There were also a large number of patients attending for travel vaccinations. I really enjoy travel vaccinations as it allows you to share your knowledge and ensure the patient’s safety whilst on holiday.

Have you done anything this week that you have never done before? How did it go?

Working on a Tuesday! I normally look forward to a mid-week day off, but I enjoyed working for a change.

One important thing that you learned this week?

Teamwork is the best kind of work.

What was your favourite part of the week? Why?

This week I really enjoyed assisting with an incision and drainage of an abscess and then dressing the wound and having a follow-up with the patient and seeing the end results. I love the continuity of working in GP and building that professional relationship with the patient and their family.

What was your worst part of the week? Why?

This week saw me give a 3-year old their pre-school vaccination and travel vaccinations at the same time (four injections.) I felt awful for the patient, as they knew what they were coming for…and for the parents for the post-injection trauma! However, everything went successfully and there were not many tears for long. It was nice to know that after the vaccinations they were going on a lovely holiday to Thailand for 5 weeks.

What have you done this week to relax?

This week saw the “Beast From The East 3” return, resulting in another snowy weekend, however that didn’t dampen our spirits and we still made it out for tapas and cocktails in Sheffield. The next will only be a 3-day week for me, so I will look forward to what work has to bring.
