What is the background behind the ACP Ready scheme?

In response to the rising demand for the development of Advanced Clinical Practitioners (ACPs) in primary care, HEE North has increased the number of trainee ACP posts that they are able to support from practices. Last financial year (2018-19) HEE North supported the training of almost 120 new ACPs in primary care across Yorkshire and Humber. The Primary Care Workforce and Training Hub coordinated the training of 22 ACPs in GP practices across South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw. Next financial year (2019-20) HEE North anticipates that it will be able to support a similar number of similar number of trainee ACP posts across the region.

The details:

Funding for 2019-20:

Salary support of £18,000 per annum per post, for a maximum of 2 years, to cover the training period. Course fees for MSc paid directly by HEE North to the ACP’s chosen university.

Practice nurses/ AHPs who wish to develop into ACP roles within primary care. These members of staff must have been working clinically for at least 3 years and hold a 2:1 degree (*some exceptions- please contact the Hub for more information.) Trainees must be available to attend university for an average of 1 day per week during term time, plus any other study support days organised by the universities in association with the Workforce & Training Hub.

Practices who are not already signed up with the Workforce and Training Hub as Advanced Training Practices will need to agree to a visit from the Hub team, to assess that the criteria for funding is being met.

Practices need to be able to support and supervise their staff member as they complete the clinical element of these programmes. On average this is expected to be 1 day per week of reflection time with a senior Mentor at the practice. There should be a clear ACP role for the trainee at the practice at the end of the training period.
